On the Issues: Restoring Excellent in Entertainment

Norfolk has a vibrant history with music and entertainment, and today we still have incredible entertainment assets like Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall, the Norva, and the Attucks Theater. I believe we can continue to build on our reputation as a vibrant entertainment destination and drive substantial economic growth on the back of a revitalized entertainment industry.

We should lean into our history by working to cluster our entertainment assets in high density corridors that are safe and do not disrupt residences.  With Scope, Chrysler Hall, The Norva, and the Wells Theater anchoring entertainment already, we should explore other entertainment facilities along Monticello Avenue in the redevelopment of the MacArthur Mall site.  I also support renovating and modernizing Scope and Chrysler Hall to ensure they remain premier venues for top–tier entertainment. By investing in these iconic structures, we can preserve their historical significance while enhancing their capacity to attract major events and performances.

We also need to make sure we have entertainment opportunities across the city.  I support improvements to the structure and programming of Ocean View Beach Park as well as better maintenance and upkeep so that we can bring the best entertainment possible to Ocean View.

Museums and Cultural Institutions
Norfolk is home to some of the most prestigious museums and cultural institutions in the region, including the Chrysler Museum of Art and Glass Studio, the Nauticus maritime museum, the Barry Art Museum, and the Hermitage Museum and Gardens. These institutions not only preserve our rich history but also offer dynamic and educational experiences that attract visitors from across the country.

I believe we should continue to support these cultural landmarks by ensuring they have the resources needed to expand their offerings and reach even more residents and visitors. This includes advocating for funding, promoting partnerships with educational institutions, and encouraging the development of new exhibits and programs that reflect the diverse history and culture of our city. By enhancing our museums, we can further solidify Norfolk's reputation as a hub of culture and learning, driving both economic growth and community pride.

Supporting Community Based Nonprofits
Norfolk’s vibrant arts and cultural scene is also nurtured by smaller nonprofit organizations such as the D’Art Center, The Muse Writer Center, Teens with a Purpose, and many others that play a crucial role in fostering creativity and community engagement. These organizations provide vital spaces for emerging artists, writers, children, and performers to develop their craft and share their talents with the community. I am dedicated to supporting these community-based nonprofits through funding opportunities and ensuring they receive the attention they deserve.  By bolstering these grassroots organizations, we can ensure that Norfolk remains a dynamic and inclusive city where creativity flourishes at every level.

Supporting Locally Owned Restaurants
Norfolk’s culinary scene is enriched by its diverse array of locally owned restaurants, which not only provide unique dining experiences but also contribute significantly to our local economy. These establishments are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods, the city, and the region, offering everything from cutting-edge cuisine to beloved comfort foods that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of our city.

I believe we must continue to support and promote these local businesses by ensuring they have the resources to thrive. This includes advocating for streamlined and predictable processes to open, providing access to grants and funding for improvements, and fostering initiatives that highlight Norfolk as a premier dining destination. By supporting our locally owned restaurants, we strengthen the character and vibrancy of our communities, making Norfolk a city where both residents and visitors are eager to explore and enjoy all that our culinary scene has to offer.

Pro-Sports
Our region is the largest in the country without a professional sports team. Could we get a Major League Soccer franchise in Norfolk? Major League Soccer is still adding teams and growing substantially year over year, our region has the second largest TV market for Premier League soccer, and we already have thriving minor league teams. As our City explores redevelopment of a number of large sites including Military Circle, there may be opportunities to attract a MLS team to Norfolk. If elected, I will make sure we seriously consider the opportunity to add to our entertainment industry with a major league sports team.
